+KRIS GRAVES PROJECTS is proud to announce the upcoming solo exhibition of photographic artist Jo Ann Walters' series Vanity + Consolation.

Jo Ann Walters has been practicing photography since the early 1980's. This selection of exquisite color photographic portraits from Walters' series Vanity + Consolation were made between 1985 and the present. She has been described by seminal photographer William Eggleston as "one of the few independently original photographers working in color today.” These original color prints have never been exhibited in New York.

Walters uses her small blue-collar hometown, Alton, Illinois, as her continuing inspiration. Approaching her subjects through the eyes of an insider with all of the ambiguities and contradictions this implies. Walters observes the intimate moments of the women, girls, children, and families pictured within the confines of the domestic space, Walters examines the complexities and forcefulness of inner life. “...Here are childhood’s intimations as well as adult recollection; here is a finely chiseled, technically and beautiful piece of art; a pensive, searing, almost sacred meditation on the ordinary.” -Dr. Laura Wexler, Yale University

Jo Ann Walters is a Guggenheim Fellow with work in collections around the world including the Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Library of Congress, St. Louis Museum of Art, Portland Museum of Art, Biblioteque Nationale, and the Center for Fine Photography, Bombay, India among others. She is currently the Head of the Photography Board of Study at Purchase College, The State University of New York.

From the website: "Deep Sleep is a quarterly online photography magazine founded by and featuring work from a small group of contributors who share the same office space in Shoreditch, East London. Each issue (published in February, May, August and November) will be on a specific theme and guest contributors are also invited to submit a set of images based on that theme."

A little more than a year ago, Deep Sleep Magazine had it's inaugural issue, titled "Invisible." Since then they have had three other issues, "Alien," "Dance," and most recently "Memory." Each issue shows an interesting, and wide variety of styles and subject matter that attempt to follow along the theme, all with written explanations of the work. Their next issue is slated for a November release.

Abelardo Morell, 'Ground Work'

Upcoming is the opening of Abelardo Morell's latest work, 'Ground Work,' at Bonni Benrubi Gallery. This show draws from his Tent-Camera series, his newest expedition into the world of the camera obscura. As opposed to his previous works, which were just the interaction of the projected image with the man made space that looked out upon the landscape, this body of work looks to bring the physical presence of the landscape into the image, projecting the world onto itself.

Dumbo Arts Festival 9.24-9.26

Laura Letinsky - After All

Opening last night at Yancey Richardson, 'After All' marks Laura Letinsky's return to Chelsea, with selections of work from her two latest series, "The Fall," and "The Dog and the Wolf." The show opened with a sudden lightning and rainstorm that drenched all the early gallery goers. Despite this, and the tornado that hit the Brooklyn/Queens area, most of the openings at 535 w22nd began to draw in some viewers after the initial downpour. “After All” was well worth the wet shoes, and the quiet emptiness of the gallery just at 6pm seemed appropriate for this new collection of work belonging to Letinsky.

The Work, although more recent than any shown at Yancey Richardson before, has clear ties to her previous bodies of work, though she seems to be pushing her ideas, and the formal qualities of this new work farther than previously. Her intellect is, as usual, ever present. Close study of the images can reveal the underlying references and critique of contemporary culture. The subtle formal qualities, though, are enough for a visit.

SULTRY II

SULTRY II, is a continuation of last years SULTRY I show. The conveyed theme throughout the exhibition, deals with the idea of, "sensual imagery" that isn't overly sexualized nor pornographic. Considering the fact that sex, is the most intriguing aspect of today's media, the artists showing in the SULTRY II show push forward the idea of visual stimulation, in a way that describes the human figure rather than exploiting it. Each photograph enables the views to focus on the details of each subject, in a way that isn't forced. Skin, Hair, Sweat, Gaze, Movement, Posture and angle, are all the main qualities that are being suggested within each picture.

SULTRY II a group show showcasing work from many different types of
photographers with various points of view on a particular subject matter.

the EXHIBITION LAB

"Founded by gallery owners Sasha Wolf and Michael Foley, The Exhibition Lab is a study center for people involved in various aspects of fine art photography.The Exhibition Lab will provide a vibrant modern-day salon for artists, scholars and others who are interested in engaging the world’s diverse and vital photography community through the gateway of New York City.Classes, in the form of seminars, workshops and semester-long courses, will be offered on subjects geared to practitioners of the medium as well as to those in the academic community.Located in Chelsea in a space shared by Sasha Wolf Gallery and Foley Gallery, the Ex Lab will function as a hub for the study of photography outside of traditional academic venues..."

The Exhibition lab opens doors for artists of all ages. It is a great way to network and get inspired. Critiques will be given by Sasha Walf as well as Michael Foley, and are divided as a six group critique once every week. A the end of the eight weeks students will receive two, one on one critiques as well as a group show in Chelsea.

Portfolio review day will take place on Sunday, June 27, 2010, starting at 11:00am - 11:00pm.

The review will consist of four 20-minute reviews with four of the 10 reviewers. Two of them being:

Kris Graves, Director, Kris Graves Projects. Kris received his BFA in photography from SUNY Purchase College. He will be teaching one of the seminar classes in July.
